Contemporary 13+

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Breaking the conventional style of dance, it focuses on the freedom of movement. When performing, dancers focus on connecting their mind and body through fluid dance moves. This allows dancers to explore emotions, and use their natural energy to portray personal expression in their dance techniques. Unlike traditional forms of dance, it is considered to be somewhat unbound by much rigidity and rules. The dancers of this genre have the ability to transform a performance based on their own interpretations. For dance styles like contemporary, Senegalese and Afro-Brazilian, just to name a few, dancers perform barefoot in order to fully feel and connect with the ground beneath them. Proponents argue that this allows for greater precision of pointed feet, spins, and greater dexterity of movement overall. Contemporary dance combines the strong but controlled legwork of Ballet, with elements of Modern Dance, focusing on the contract and release of the body, and the unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction. It also employs floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristics of Modern dance.  Dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Dancers focus on floor work, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. Contemporary is commonly instrumental but can also have vocals to it. Music can be any genre; pop, rock and even hip hop R&B styles. -More composers are starting to explore contemporary styled of ballet and use more modern edgy music.
